The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied reports that it is abolishing the Directorate General for European Integration, calling them “not true” and confirming instead a structural reform.
As the official statement declared, the Ministry will establish a new Political Directorate for European Affairs, which will strengthen the existing Europe and European Integration Departments.
“In turn, four divisions will be created within the European Integration Department to serve the country’s EU integration agenda,” the statement read. “The creation of the directorate will additionally facilitate the effective coordination of relations with European countries in order to fulfill the aforementioned tasks.”
The clarification comes after opposition coalition member Grigol Gegelia (Lelo–Strong Georgia) claimed that Foreign Minister Botchorishvili was eliminating the Directorate and laying off 250 employees. The Ministry has not commented directly on staff-related changes.
