Beka Liluashvili, a member of the For Georgia party, described the 2019 Chorchana incident as the only instance in Georgia’s recent history where the country’s territorial interests were effectively defended without triggering a military escalation.
“This was the sole case, during Giorgi Gakharia’s time as Minister of Internal Affairs, when national interests were safeguarded through the joint efforts of relevant agencies—without endangering peace,” Liluashvili said.
He criticized the ongoing investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Parliamentary Commission, calling it politically driven and aimed at targeting Gakharia.
“We all remember the threats made against Gakharia and his team, followed by an orchestrated ambush in Batumi involving armed individuals. That investigation has been dormant for five months, and crucial footage is still hidden. The current summons appears to be setting the stage for political and criminal persecution. It’s a clear case of pressure, showing exactly who Georgian Dream considers a real threat,” he added.
The investigation concerns the opening of a police checkpoint near the village of Chorchana in 2019, near the occupation line with the Tskhinvali region.
