The European Union has extended its congratulations to His Holiness and Beatitude Shio III following his election as Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, emphasizing confidence in his spiritual leadership during times of global uncertainty.
In a statement, the EU Delegation to Georgia congratulated the newly elected Patriarch and highlighted the historic role of the Georgian Orthodox Church in preserving the country’s identity.
“The European Union extends its warmest congratulations on the election of His Holiness and Beatitude Shio III as Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia,” the statement reads.
“The Georgian Orthodox Church has played a key role throughout Georgia’s history in preserving national and cultural identity,” the EU Delegation noted.
“At a moment when the world is in great need of moral clarity, reconciliation and hope, we trust that Your Holiness’ spiritual guidance and wisdom will be a source of inspiration for all those who seek unity in times of uncertainty and division,” the statement added.
Shio III, Metropolitan of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, was elected as Georgia’s 142nd Catholicos-Patriarch during an expanded council of the Georgian Orthodox Church held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) on May 11.
His Holiness received 22 votes. Metropolitan Iobi of Urbnisi and Ruisi secured nine votes, while Metropolitan Grigol of Poti and Khobi received seven. One ballot was annulled.
The election followed the death of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, who passed away on March 17, 2026, at the age of 93.
