Cracks found on left bank road, part of the road collapses

Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi, Irakli Bendeliani, reported that cracks were discovered yesterday on the road surface along the left bank of the Mtkvari River near the Gagra restaurant.

“We acted immediately, partially restricting traffic in the area, which helped us avoid any hazards,” he told journalists.

He noted that 24-hour monitoring began at once.

“Unfortunately, the situation worsened today when a section of the ground collapsed. Preliminary data suggests that the Mtkvari River washed out the foundation of the supporting wall, causing the road to give way,” Bendeliani explained.

Municipal services have been mobilized and are now working around the clock to restore the area.
“Thanks to yesterday’s quick response, no pedestrians or vehicles were in the affected section when it collapsed,” he emphasized.

Bendeliani also announced that traffic will be further restricted, with one more lane closed and traffic made one-directional, allowing two lanes in each direction.

A dam and a section of the roadway on the left bank of the Mtkvari River have collapsed.

Restrictive barriers have been erected around the site.
