Community Union Sveri: Promoting Solar Energy in Chiatura Municipality

In a commendable effort to promote renewable energy, the A(A)IP Community Union “Sveri” is spearheading a project focused on enhancing solar energy usage throughout Chiatura Municipality. This project, which won the EU-funded small grants competition held within CENN’s Climate Action Project aims not only to meet local energy needs but also to educate the community about sustainable practices and the pressing issues of climate change.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Tamaz Tsutskiridze, chairman of the Community Union “Sveri,” emphasized the importance of this initiative: “We are committed to promoting solar energy in the municipality of Chiatura.” The project encompasses a variety of strategic measures designed to foster a deeper understanding of renewable energy among residents and to provide practical solutions to existing energy challenges.

One of the project’s major accomplishments has been the installation of a solar water heating system at the public school in Sveri. This system is not only a step towards sustainability but also a financial boon for the school. “This system saves about 300 GEL in electricity costs every month,” Tsutskiridze explained. The financial savings have allowed the school to redirect funds toward vital educational resources, thereby enhancing the overall learning environment for students.

The initiative also prioritizes education, recognizing that knowledge is key to fostering a culture of sustainability. The Community Union has conducted thematic training sessions focused on climate change and renewable energy issues at Sveri Public School. Students have actively engaged with the material, learning about the impacts of climate change and the importance of adopting sustainable practices. “We believe that educating the next generation is crucial for fostering a culture of sustainability,” Tsutskiridze noted, highlighting the role of youth in driving future change.

In addition to training sessions for students, the Community Union organized workshops for local residents at the administration building of the Sveri village council. These sessions aimed to engage the broader community, providing valuable information about renewable energy options and strategies for mitigating climate change. Tsutskiridze expressed a strong desire to empower local residents, stating, “Our aim is to inspire them to explore sustainable practices in their own lives.” By equipping individuals with knowledge and resources, the Union hopes to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly choices throughout the community.

The initiative has sparked significant interest among local residents. Teachers and students from nearby schools have visited the project site, eager to learn more about solar energy and its applications. Moreover, a local farmer recently implemented a similar solar project, showcasing the growing awareness and enthusiasm for renewable energy solutions in the region. Tsutskiridze remarked, “We hope to see more applicants emerge if the costs remain affordable,” indicating optimism for the future of solar energy in Chiatura.

As the project continues to unfold, the Community Union “Sveri” is paving the way for a greener future in Chiatura Municipality. The Union’s efforts exemplify how local organizations can drive positive change through education, community engagement, and practical solutions. The successful implementation of the solar water heating system and the educational initiatives not only benefit the school but also contribute to a broader understanding of renewable energy within the community.

Looking Ahead

With the ongoing success of these projects, the Community Union envisions a future where solar energy becomes a staple in local households and institutions. The emphasis on education and community involvement is likely to yield lasting benefits, fostering a sense of responsibility toward the environment among residents. Tsutskiridze expressed hope that as more community members become involved, the potential for further initiatives will increase, creating a ripple effect that could inspire neighboring areas to adopt similar practices.

In conclusion, the Community Union “Sveri” is making significant strides in promoting solar energy and sustainable practices in Chiatura Municipality. By focusing on education, community engagement, and practical solutions, the Union is setting a powerful example of how local organizations can drive positive change. As the community embraces these initiatives, it moves closer to a greener, more sustainable future—one where the benefits of renewable energy are felt by all.

Since 2021, CENN has been implementing a four-year project, the Georgia Climate Action Program, with the financial support of the European Union. The project is being carried out in four target regions: Kakheti, Imereti, Guria, and Racha-Lechkhumi, and its aim is to increase civil society engagement in the development and implementation of climate change policies.

As part of the project, CENN announced the competition for the innovative ideas on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Community “Sveri” is one of the winners, implementing a 9,000 EURO initiative for climate mitigaton.
