CNN responds to the recent developments in Georgia, mass protests and detentions of activists that followed Russian FM Sergey Lavrov’s relatives presence in the country.
“Police in Georgia removed protesters who targeted a hotel following reports relatives of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were staying there in defiance of sanctions, according to public broadcaster First Channel.
The opposition United National Movement party staged a demonstration outside the Kvareli Lake Hotel in northeastern Georgia on Saturday, according to First Channel.
It comes as flights between Georgia and Russia resumed this week for the first time in four years, sparking anger. Since winning its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia has played a balancing act between pro-European sentiment among its citizens and the influence of its powerful neighbor Russia.
Reporters on the ground said the situation outside the hotel had grown “tense” on Saturday after protesters pelted eggs at a minibus that left the hotel carrying Russian tourists,” reads the article.
CNN has reached out to the Russian Foreign Ministry for comment.
