The Chairman of the Supreme Council of Adjara, David Gabaidze, has announced his resignation.
Gabaidze said the decision was made on personal grounds, expressing gratitude to the ruling Georgian Dream party, its founder, and its members for their support.
He dismissed speculation that his reported close ties to Tornike Rizhvadze influenced his decision, stressing that he had been considering stepping down for some time.
“I have been contemplating this for a considerable time and have discussed it with my team. Having led the Supreme Council for less than ten years, I believe it is time for new directions,” Gabaidze stated, adding that his appointment as chairman predated Rizhvadze’s tenure as head of the regional government.
Gabaidze also confirmed that he will soon give up his mandate as a member of the Supreme Council. While he did not elaborate on his future plans, he indicated that new opportunities lie ahead.
He had been elected for a third term as Chairman of the Supreme Council following the most recent elections.
