The ALDE Party expressed strong outrage following the BBC investigation alleging that Georgian authorities used a World War I–era chemical agent against peaceful pro-EU protesters in 2024. In a statement published on X, ALDE described the findings as “a shocking assault on fundamental rights.”
The political group urged international partners to take measures preventing such abuses, including restricting the transfer of equipment that could be used against civilians.
“We support our member parties and the opposition demanding an independent international inquiry and urge partners to restrict the transfer of equipment that could be turned against civilians.
We have stood with the courageous people of Georgia throughout 365 days of protest in their fight for a democratic, pro-European future, and we will continue to stand with Georgia,” the statement reads.
