Afghan Sadigov, an Azerbaijani journalist who was recently deported from Georgia, has reportedly been released after being detained by police in Baku, his wife, Sevinj Sadigova, reports.
In a post shared on social media, Sadigova said she had received the latest information confirming her husband’s release, though she noted that she has not yet been able to establish direct contact with him and therefore lacks precise details regarding the reasons for his detention.
“Given the recent developments, I have serious grounds for concern. Everything we have gone through so far shows that our lives have been completely turned upside down and destroyed. In such a situation, it is impossible not to worry. I am very concerned about Afghan’s life,” she wrote.
Sadigova had earlier reported that her husband had been detained by police in Baku.
Sadigov’s case has drawn attention following his deportation from Georgia on April 5. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs says the journalist was administratively detained for allegedly insulting a police officer on social media. He was fined 2,000 GEL, expelled from the country, and banned from re-entry for a period of three years.
Meanwhile, Tamta Mikheladze, director of the Social Justice Center and Sadigov’s lawyer reported that the journalist had been staying at a relative’s home in Baku prior to the detention.
