The so-called “president” of occupied Abkhazia, Badra Gunba, will visit Moscow to take part in events marking Victory Day in World War II. The information was reported by Russian media, citing the so-called ambassador of Abkhazia, Alkhaz Kvitsinia.
Kvitsinia claimed that Badra Gunba had received an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Abkhazia’s president received an invitation from Putin to attend the May 9 parade and will definitely travel to Moscow to participate in the celebratory events,” said Alkhaz Kvitsinia.
Badra Gunba became the de facto “president” of occupied Abkhazia on April 2, 2025, following a period of political unrest. His predecessor, Aslan Bzhania, resigned in November 2024 amid mass protests against a controversial investment agreement with Russia. Gunba, then vice president, assumed the role of acting president and subsequently won the presidency in a runoff election on March 1, 2025, securing approximately 55% of the vote against opposition leader Adgur Ardzinba.
