Gakharia for Georgia: Ruling Party’s policy costs Georgia strategic role in region

Gakharia for Georgia party member Giorgi Sharashidze has accused the ruling Georgian Dream of undermining Georgia’s strategic position in the South Caucasus, citing the recent US diplomatic engagement with Armenia and Azerbaijan that did not include Tbilisi.

Speaking at a briefing, Sharashidze said the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance to Armenia and Azerbaijan, while bypassing Georgia, demonstrates that the new US administration no longer views Georgia as a reliable and strategic partner in the region. He claimed that key geopolitical developments are unfolding in the South Caucasus “before our eyes, but without our participation,” as new frameworks for reducing Russian influence and shaping long-term regional peace take form.

Sharashidze argued that what he described as Georgian Dream’s “anti-national policy” creates serious risks for Georgia’s security, economic development, and prospects for sustainable peace. He said the ruling party’s response to the US visit was limited to propaganda efforts, offering society little more than what he called “accidental protocol photos” from Washington.

He also criticized the government’s rhetoric toward the administration of US President Donald Trump, accusing Georgian Dream officials of labeling the new US leadership as part of the so-called “Deep State” and portraying it as an instigator of wars.

Sharashidze claimed that Georgia’s loss of strategic significance is the result of what he called the ruling party’s deliberate and irrational policies. He said that not long ago Georgia had been a key US partner in the region, while today, as Georgian Dream faces international isolation and increasingly describes strategic partners as adversaries, neighboring countries are benefiting from economic opportunities and security guarantees that Georgia itself should have secured.

“For what Georgian Dream is depriving the country of today, the Georgian people once shed blood, and the ruling party bears full responsibility for this,” Sharashidze said, adding that despite what he described as “treacherous activities” by the government, Georgia must actively work to restore its place on the US political agenda.

The Georgian Dream party has not yet responded to Sharashidze’s remarks.
