New-design electronic ID cards now available in Georgia

The State Services Development Agency under the Ministry of Justice of Georgia has begun issuing a new generation of electronic identity cards featuring an updated design and enhanced security elements.

Agency says the new electronic ID cards incorporate modern protective technologies that fully comply with the latest international security standards. The updated design also emphasizes national symbols, reflecting Georgia’s cultural identity and state heritage.

The Agency clarified that the cost of obtaining an electronic ID card remains unchanged, and citizens who already hold valid identity cards are not required to replace them. Existing IDs will remain valid until their expiration dates.

As part of the update, the new electronic ID cards now include the cardholder’s fingerprints as well as a QR code. When scanned, the QR code provides access to additional information, including the document number and status, the holder’s registered address, and—upon request—the individual’s student status or disability status.

Citizens may apply for the new electronic ID cards at territorial offices of the State Services Development Agency, at branches of the House of Justice, through mobile justice units, or remotely via the Agency’s official website at sda.gov.ge.

Electronic identity cards serve as one of the key personal identification documents in Georgia and are widely used for accessing public services, signing digital documents, and interacting with both state and private institutions. The introduction of the updated design and security features is part of broader efforts to modernize public services, strengthen data protection, and align Georgia’s identification systems with European and international standards.

The State Services Development Agency stated that the rollout of the new-design electronic ID cards will continue nationwide, ensuring equal access for citizens across the country.
