Georgia’s Ministry of Education has started a major reform to the general education system, introducing a voluntary 12th grade while affirming that 11 years of schooling will remain the mandatory standard.

Education Minister Givi Mikanadze explained that the updated framework guarantees a ‘complete general education’ within the 11-year cycle. However, the ministry will offer an optional 12th grade for students who wish to continue their studies.

To enroll, students will undergo a special registration process. A dedicated online platform will open each March, allowing those interested to sign up. Based on this demand, schools will open a 12th grade in the following academic year specifically for registered students.

Mikanadze emphasized that the reform preserves student choice while ensuring the system remains aligned with modern education standards. The voluntary pathway, he noted, is designed to accommodate personal academic goals and provide flexibility within the national curriculum.
