Romanian MEP Dan Barna has strongly condemned the politically motivated detention of Gela Khasaia, a member of the Georgian opposition party Girchi – More Freedom and part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, in Georgia.
Barna highlighted that Khasaia’s arrest on what he describes as fabricated charges represents a troubling new attack on the opposition by the Georgian authorities. “His detention on falsified charges is another alarming move against the opposition in Georgia. As a refugee from Russian-occupied Abkhazia, his voice against oppression is vital. We demand his immediate and unconditional release. Silencing critics will not halt Georgia’s European aspirations,” the European Parliamentarian wrote on social media platform X.
