Kavelashvili to Zelensky: Georgia has never had such an independent and nationally-oriented gov’t

Mikheil Kavelashvili has responded to remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who told the UN General Assembly that “Europe has lost Georgia and we must not allow the loss of Moldova.”

“I do not want to enter into a polemic with the leader of a country at war. Of course, it is offensive to every Georgian, but I will repeat once again that Georgia has never had such an independent, sovereign and nationally-oriented government,” Kavelashvili stated.

He recalled that in the first days of Russia’s invasion, when Kyiv was under heavy bombardment, only a few embassy representatives remained in the Ukrainian capital—including a Georgian diplomat. Despite this, he said, Ukraine expelled Georgia’s ambassador.

“The ambassador of this country, who endured the bombing and the threat of physical destruction, was expelled. He [Zelensky] demanded volunteers, and when we did not send them, our ambassador was expelled,” Kavelashvili said, stressing that Georgia ranked among the top five contributors of humanitarian aid to Ukraine at the time.

“Imagine if someone did that for your country—any country—and its people. Is it possible that you would respond with such offensive actions?!” he added.
