During a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the shared challenges faced by Georgia and Hungary, underlining the importance of unity and cooperation in overcoming them.
“We face similar challenges, and it is vital that we stand together in addressing them,” Kobakhidze stated. “I want to thank you for your unwavering support. Georgia will always stand where the interests of the Hungarian people lie.”
The Prime Minister expressed particular gratitude for Hungary’s steadfast backing of Georgia’s European integration, reaffirming his government’s commitment to joining the European Union by 2030.
“I want to sincerely thank you for supporting Georgia’s European path,” he said. “Our goal is clear and ambitious: EU membership by 2030. By 2028, we aim to fulfill 90% of the obligations under the Association Agreement, as well as 90% of those under the Free Trade Agreement. In this context, expert collaboration and your continued support are vital to our success.”
Kobakhidze went on to say that Georgia deeply values the support it receives from Hungary, both at the governmental level and through personal backing from Prime Minister Orbán.
“We feel a responsibility to respond to your support with equal dedication. The Georgian people truly appreciate your personal involvement, Mr. Prime Minister, as well as Hungary’s strong support for our country. The current state of our partnership provides a solid foundation for further development, and the momentum is clearly positive. We are committed to deepening and strengthening bilateral cooperation in every sphere.”
The Georgian Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of the Georgia–Hungary Intergovernmental Summit, describing it as an important platform for advancing bilateral relations.
“This format, launched two years ago, marks its second meeting this year,” he noted. “It has provided us the opportunity to assess the progress made and to map out future plans together. I thank you and all participating ministers for the engaging discussions.”
Kobakhidze claimed that the summit covered a wide range of topics crucial to bilateral cooperation, including trade and the economy, energy, connectivity, environmental protection, agriculture, defense, justice, education, and culture.
“We can confidently say there is vast potential for deepening cooperation in all these areas, and we are committed to realizing it fully,” he added.
The Prime Minister welcomed the signing of several memorandum of understanding during the summit, stressing their role in further expanding ties between the two nations.
“All facets of our relationship are important to us. Our political dialogue is particularly close, as demonstrated by the frequent high-level visits and exchanges. Today’s discussions also underscored the importance of enhancing not only government-to-government collaboration but also business-to-business partnerships, especially in trade and economic development.”
Irakli Kobakhidze is paying an official visit to Hungary. As part of the visit, the second session of the Georgia-Hungary Intergovernmental Commission was convened in Budapest.
