Bidzina Ivanishvili, honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has declined a request to meet with US Ambassador Robin Dunnigan, who sought to deliver a message from the Trump Administration regarding US-Georgia relations, the US Embassy in Georgia announced.
The information reads that at the request of Secretary Rubio, Ambassador Dunnigan reached out on May 22 to arrange a meeting with Ivanishvili. The purpose was to convey a message from Washington and outline specific steps the Georgian government could take to demonstrate its commitment to restoring ties with the United States.
The US has expressed hope that the Georgian government genuinely intends to renew its 33-year partnership with the United States and reaffirm its bond with the American people. Ivanishvili’s refusal to meet adds to growing concerns over the direction of US-Georgia relations.
