Mountaineer Nikoloz Faliani dies in fall on Mount Ushba; three others rescued

Mountaineer and mountain guide Nikoloz Faliani has died after falling from a height during an expedition on Mount Ushba in Svaneti, the Emergency Management Service announced. His body has been transported to Mestia.

Faliani was part of a group of four individuals trekking on Mount Ushba. Emergency services reported that the remaining three were safely rescued.

“Based on information received by the Emergency Management Agency, four individuals were moving on foot on Mount Ushba, one of whom fell from a height,” the official statement says.

Firefighters and rescuers quickly launched a search and rescue operation. A Border Police helicopter carrying a special response team was dispatched from Tbilisi.

As part of the operation, the three survivors were evacuated by helicopter from an altitude of 3,600 meters. Rescuers also located and recovered the body of the deceased.
