Council of the European Union suspends visa-free travel for Georgian diplomats, officials

The Council of the European Union has decided to suspend parts of the EU-Georgia visa facilitation agreement, reads a press release from the Council.

The suspension of the visa facilitation agreement will apply to the following categories:

Members of Georgia’s official delegations participating in official meetings and other events organized by intergovernmental organizations on the territory of an EU member state.

Members of Georgia’s national and regional governments and parliaments, the Constitutional Court, and the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Holders of diplomatic passports.

“Georgian citizens who hold ordinary passports will still benefit from visa-free travel to the EU for short stays,” the press release states.

The Council explains that once the partial suspension of the EU-Georgia visa facilitation agreement comes into effect—and given that Georgian citizens are exempt from visa requirements—member states may decide to introduce national measures requiring visas for holders of diplomatic, service/official, and special passports.
