I address the Georgian people: I admire your strength to build a free, European future. Stand firm! Moldova is with you! – the president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, wrote on X.
She claims that Moldovans took a decisive step on the European road during yesterday’s elections.
“Moldovans took a decisive step on our European path yesterday. But the struggle for democracy in Moldova and our region continues,” Sandu wrote.
Moldova’s pro-EU President Maia Sandu has claimed a second term after a tense election run-off seen as a choice between Europe and Russia.
With most votes counted, Sandu had won 55%, and in a late-night speech she promised to be president for all Moldovans.
Her rival Alexandr Stoianoglo, who was backed by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, had called for a closer relationship with Moscow.
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, congratulated Sandu on her victory.
“Maia Sandu, your victory is our victory! Moldova’s elections are the best ‘evidence’ of Georgia’s stolen elections,” she wrote.
