Kobakhidze: Absurd records of the European Parliament cannot have any value

Even the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union would be envious of this level of absurdity, – Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the Georgian Dream party, said about the resolution adopted by the European Parliament regarding the health of the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili.

In addition, Kobakhidze claimed that the Hungarian MEPs do not obey the general coordination directed against Georgia.

“The absurd records of the European Parliament cannot have any value. I will say once again that even the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union would be envious of this level of absurdity. It is already the third time that the European Parliament makes incredibly absurd decisions. Neither the first nor the second resolution was shared by the European Commission or the European Council.

“When MEPs attack the Georgian state, we need to protect it. When the records of the European Parliament are based on lies, it is an unequivocal attack on our national interests.

“Hungary had a healthy position, which is very welcome. It can be seen that the Hungarian MEPs do not obey the general coordination directed against our country”, Kobakhidze said.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the health of the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. The resolution “underlines the fundamental role that oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili has played in Saakashvili’s ongoing detention as part of a personal vendetta”. The European Parliament “therefore reiterates its call on the Council and democratic partners to consider imposing sanctions on Mr Ivanishvili for his role in the deterioration of the political process in Georgia”.

In the resolution, the European Parliament expresses grave concerns about the deteriorating health of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

MEPs call on the Georgian authorities to release Saakashvili and allow him to receive proper medical treatment abroad. They urge current President Salome Zurabishvili to use her constitutional right to pardon him.

According to MEPs, the continuing failure to improve the former President’s situation risks hampering Georgia’s EU candidacy prospects.

577 MEPs supported the resolution, 33 voted against it, and 26 abstained.
