At a special meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee, it was decided that the final of 2021/22 UEFA Men’s Champions League will no longer be held in St. Petersburg due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The right to hold the final has instead been given to Paris.
Due to the aggression against Ukraine, Russia was deprived of the right to host the final match of the main European tournament.
The game will be hosted on May 28 in Paris at Saint-Denis. The last time the Champions League final was held at this stadium was 16 years ago.
“UEFA wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to the French Republic President Emmanuel Macron for his personal support and commitment to have the European club football’s most prestigious game moved to France at a time of unparalleled crisis. Together with the French government, UEFA will fully support multi-stakeholder efforts to ensure the provision of rescue for football players and their families in Ukraine who face dire human suffering, destruction, and displacement,” reads the statement.
