Occupied Abkhazia Restricts Movement to Territory Controlled by Central Gov’t ahead of Elections

From 28 to 30 October, movement from occupied Abkhazia to the territory controlled by the central government is being illegally restricted to all persons except those in need of medical assistance, the State Security Service reports.

Such illegal decisions are often associated with various fictitious reasons, including the protection of security in connection with the ongoing elections in the territory controlled by the central government, the State Security Service says.

The Russian occupation forces made similar damaging decisions in connection with the first round of the 2021 municipal elections.

“The central government has activated a hotline and informed the European Union Monitoring Mission about the illegal restrictions on free movement,” the agency said.

The Enguri Bridge connects occupied Abkhazia with the rest of Georgia. The movement on the bridge is often restricted by de-facto authorities for various reasons, mainly for the “safety” of the locals.

The second round of local self-government elections is scheduled to take place in Georgia on October 30.
