Police in Tbilisi have solved a robbery case shortly after it was committed, with one person arrested, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

Officers from the Vake-Saburtalo Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department arrested a previously convicted person on robbery charges, the ministry said.

The investigation established that the suspect was in one of Tbilisi’s squares when he threatened two foreign citizens and brandished a bladed weapon. The suspect then unlawfully took the mobile phones belonging to the two individuals and fled the scene.

Law enforcement officers carried out operational and investigative measures, leading to the suspect’s arrest shortly after the crime was committed.

Police also recovered the mobile phones allegedly taken by the suspect as a result of the robbery. The devices have been seized as evidence.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 179 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which concerns robbery and carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
