The “Strong Georgia – Lelo” coalition says it has filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court seeking to restore emigrants’ right to vote in elections.
“Georgian Dream suffered a complete collapse at the polling stations established abroad during the 2024 elections,” said Giorgi Sioridze. “In response, it practically took away our compatriots’ right to vote.
“Polling stations abroad will no longer be opened. Their response and message to our emigrants was particularly cynical: they said, ‘We are not taking away their right to vote, and everyone can come back on election day.’ How unrealistic all of this is is well known to the public, because previously the problem was precisely the insufficient and inadequate number of polling stations opened abroad.
“For years, we fought to ensure that more people abroad could participate in the political process – people who make an enormous contribution to the country’s economic life, so that they could also participate in political life and in shaping the political will.
“Therefore, Georgian Dream has effectively taken away their right to vote, and I want to address our emigrants on behalf of our coalition: join us, and let us begin this fight together!
“The ‘Strong Georgia – Lelo’ coalition has worked on the constitutional complaint for months and prepared an excellent legal argument, because this is not merely a regulatory change; it is an unconstitutional act. The complaint will be published, and every emigrant will have the opportunity to formally join the claim, become a party to the case, litigate before the Constitutional Court, and receive legal representation from our coalition’s qualified lawyers before the Constitutional Court,” Sioridze said.
In December 2025, Parliament adopted a new version of the Election Code under which emigrants will no longer be able to vote from abroad.
“Georgian Dream” maintains that “the amendment helps prevent interference with the free expression of will abroad.”
