A popular children’s squishy toy has been recalled in the United Kingdom after tests found excessive levels of benzene, a chemical that poses a serious health risk.
The product, known as Squeezy Dumplings, was recalled after the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards classified it as presenting a “serious chemical risk.” Tests found that the outer layer of some toys contained 20mg/kg of benzene, above the permitted level.
The soft plastic toys, designed to look like dumplings inside small basket-style containers, became popular through social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where users shared unboxing videos and collectible versions of the products.
The recall affects products sold by Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd, based in Cardiff. Authorities said the affected toys did not meet UK toy safety requirements and lacked sufficient product identification information. Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled items and keep them away from children.
Benzene exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, while higher exposure levels may lead to more serious health effects.
The recall comes as UK authorities have issued broader warnings over counterfeit and unsafe versions of viral squishy toys. Trading Standards officers in several areas have seized similar products over concerns about missing safety markings, chemical risks, and failure to comply with toy safety regulations.
