The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) says police have arrested one person in connection with the assault on stand-up comedian and civic activist Onise Okriashvili.
The MIA said officers from the Vake-Saburtalo Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department detained the suspect on charges of violence.
The investigation states that on July 22, the accused physically assaulted Okriashvili in Tbilisi before fleeing the scene.
The Ministry said the suspect later appeared at the Vake-Saburtalo Police Department, where law enforcement officers arrested him.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 126 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which covers violence. Additional investigative actions are ongoing, the Ministry said.
Okriashvili was assaulted near his home in Tbilisi’s Vake district on the evening of July 22.
The assault came after several days of negative coverage of the comedian by pro-government media outlets following the circulation of a clip from one of his stand-up performances.
