Moscow came under a major overnight drone attack on June 30, with Russian authorities claiming air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 50 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) headed toward the Russian capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attack began at around 04:00 local time. He said Russian air defense forces shot down 50 drones approaching the city but did not immediately report casualties or significant damage.
Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, temporarily imposed flight restrictions at several airports serving Moscow during the attack to ensure aviation safety. The restrictions were later lifted after the situation stabilized.
The Russian Defense Ministry said a total of 419 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones were intercepted and destroyed across multiple regions of Russia overnight, making it one of the largest drone attacks reported in recent weeks.
Ukraine did not immediately comment on the reported attack. Kyiv rarely confirms responsibility for strikes inside Russia, although it has increasingly targeted military, energy, and logistical infrastructure deep inside Russian territory as part of its broader campaign against Moscow’s war effort.
