A person wanted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for multiple serious crimes has been arrested at Tbilisi International Airport, reported Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The ministry said the arrest was carried out by officers of the Central Criminal Police Department and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia in close coordination with the FBI and within the framework of a joint declaration signed with representatives of the US Department of State.
MIA says law enforcement officers detained the suspect following investigative actions conducted at Tbilisi International Airport. The individual was being sought at the request of the FBI on charges including aiding and abetting criminal activity, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering.
The ministry noted that extradition procedures are currently underway in accordance with the law.
“The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has successfully cooperated with US law enforcement agencies for many years in combating various categories of crime, including organized crime,” the statement said.
