The Tbilisi Development Fund is launching a rehabilitation project at the Sioni Assumption Cathedral in Tbilisi, the Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, said at a municipal government session.
The Sioni Assumption Cathedral is a cultural heritage monument, and its frescoes are currently at risk of damage.
“The existence of monuments with the status of cultural heritage is a great wealth for our city. We have implemented a number of important projects in this direction. The Tbilisi Development Fund is now launching a rehabilitation project at the Sioni Cathedral,” Kaladze said.
He added that the cathedral’s roof and bell tower are currently damaged, allowing precipitation to enter the building and damage the walls.
“The current condition of the church’s roof and bell tower is damaged, which is why the incoming precipitation is damaging the walls and endangering the frescoes in the church. Accordingly, rehabilitation will be carried out on this part of the church,” Kaladze said.
Kaladze said tender procedures have already been completed, the winning company identified, and a contract signed. He added that rehabilitation works are scheduled to be completed by the end of October this year.
