The Ministry of Culture held a celebratory event at the Rustaveli National Theatre to mark International Museum Day, bringing together museum professionals and officials from across Georgia.

As part of the event, 20 museum employees from institutions across the country were awarded the “Museum Professional of the Year” prize for their contributions to preservation, research and educational work.

The recipients represent national and regional museums, including the Union of Museums, the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and institutions such as the Svaneti Historical and Ethnographic Museum, the Uplistsikhe Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, the Gremi Museum and the Kutaisi State Historical Museum.

Awarded roles range from curators and researchers to tour guides and fund managers, covering both scientific and public-facing work in the museum sector.

Organisers said the initiative is part of broader efforts to recognise the role of museum staff in safeguarding Georgia’s cultural heritage and expanding public engagement through exhibitions and educational programmes.

Officials also highlighted ongoing reforms in the museum sector, aimed at improving institutional development and professional recognition, as well as expanding international research cooperation, including participation in a global study on the 8,000-year history of wheat involving the Georgian National Museum.

The event was attended by representatives of parliament, the Tbilisi City Council, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia’s education and culture ministry, and museum professionals from across the country.

International Museum Week is being marked across Georgia with a series of cultural and educational events in museums and museum-reserves nationwide.
