French National Assembly calls on gov’t to publicly condemn Russian influence on Georgian institutions

The French National Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning what it describes as the Georgian government’s authoritarian course, violations of fundamental rights, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters.

The resolution was approved by 68 votes to 28.

Based on the text, the French National Assembly expresses its “full solidarity with the Georgian people mobilized for a democratic and European future” and welcomes the joint declaration of July 11, 2025, issued by 20 European states, including France, alongside EU foreign ministers and the High Representative of the European Union, condemning what it called “the trend towards authoritarianism in Georgia.”

“The resolution condemns the authoritarian course of the Georgian government, the violation of fundamental rights, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters,” the document states.

It also expresses “deep concern” over information published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on December 1, 2025, alleging that Georgian law enforcement agencies used bromobenzyl cyanide against peaceful demonstrators during protests in the fall of 2024. The resolution supports calls for an independent international investigation into the matter.

The French National Assembly further urges European institutions to maintain the de facto suspension of Georgia’s European Union accession process until political criteria are met, including respect for political pluralism, protection of fundamental rights, and the holding of “free, fair and international-standard parliamentary elections.”

In addition, the resolution calls on the French government to actively support democratic actors in Georgia, including civil society organizations, independent media and academic institutions.

“The resolution calls on the Government of the French Republic to publicly condemn foreign interference, in particular the influence of the Russian regime on Georgian political institutions and oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili,” the document reads.

The resolution also reaffirms France’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, attended the discussion of a resolution on Georgia in the French National Assembly.

Salome Zurabishvili shared the relevant information on social media.
