The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, says a new project will soon be presented to optimize the resources of the Enguri HPP.
Speaking during a debate on Imedi TV, Kvrivishvili said the Enguri HPP is undergoing a difficult but necessary reform that includes personnel, operational, and technical areas.
“A very difficult, but complex and very necessary reform is underway at the Enguri HPP today, including personnel, as well as other operational and technical areas, and we will soon present an important new project that will optimize and revitalize the resources of the Enguri HPP every year, which, in turn, implies infrastructural interventions so that the HPP continues to bring more benefits to our country,” Kvrivishvili said.
Today, the Enguri hydroelectric power plant is the only facility where Georgians and Abkhazians cooperate closely. The plant’s units and control panel are located on the Abkhazian side in the village of Saberio, Gali district, while the dam is located in the Georgian-controlled territory of Tsalenjikha municipality.
Reports indicate that the Enguri HPP, 100% owned by the Ministry of Economy, is planning to lay off 400 to 500 employees. Information about the potential large-scale layoffs was shared by residents of the Gali region at the end of February. The staff reduction could affect several hundred employees, most of whom live in Gali villages.
