24-year-old Murman Kalandia was killed after being hit by drunk police officer on March 11.
Kalandia passed away this morning. He leaves behind his 21-year-old wife, who is five months pregnant, and his parents.
The drunk police officer had reportedly been dispatched for duty on March 11 in Zugdidi, in front of the regional administration building, where a protest was taking place. According to protocol, he should not have been on duty, as he had already worked the previous day. Police regulations prohibit officers from being assigned to shifts for two consecutive 24-hour periods.
Despite this, K.K. did not object to the assignment, nor did he disclose that he was under the influence of alcohol. Instead, he got into his personal vehicle and headed toward Zugdidi. The tragedy occurred when, driving at high speed, he lost control of the car, veered onto the sidewalk, and severely injured Murman Kalandia.
Kalandia fought for his life in intensive care until his passing today.
