Georgia’s fifth president Salome Zurabishvili has sharply criticized the Georgian Dream government after prosecutors announced new criminal charges against key opposition figures, calling the move “straight out of a Russian handbook.”
“Russian handbook at work: new accusations levelled by the General Prosecutor against almost all opposition leaders. Sabotage, plotting to topple the government, serving foreign interests … carrying sentences up to 11 years. Georgian Dream answers the EU’s report: ‘We don’t care,’” Zurabishvili wrote on X.
In a separate post, Zurabishvili accused the ruling party of spreading pro-government propaganda and shielding Russia from criticism.
“Propaganda, lies, orchestrated message box… Imedi, Rustavi and other small channels dominate the Georgian media and bring to the public a distorted reality: the EU is the enemy, Georgia is an economic front-runner… Russia is never criticized, while Russian leaders praise Georgian Dream,” she stated.
Her remarks come amid growing tensions following the Prosecutor General’s Office’s decision to launch criminal proceedings against several opposition leaders, including Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nikanor Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze.
