Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported on his recent meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, thanking him for his ongoing support amid Ukraine’s continued struggle against Russian aggression.
In a statement following the talks, Zelensky emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation, acknowledging Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic efforts and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The two leaders discussed regional security, economic collaboration, and potential peace initiatives aimed at resolving the war.
“I appreciate Saudi Arabia’s steadfast support and commitment to peace. Our discussions focused on ways to strengthen our partnership and ensure stability in the region,” Zelensky said.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in the Ukraine Conflict
Saudi Arabia has sought to maintain a neutral stance while positioning itself as a potential mediator in the war. In 2023, Riyadh hosted peace talks attended by representatives from Ukraine and several other nations, aiming to find diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
The Kingdom has also provided Ukraine with humanitarian aid and economic assistance, including a $400 million aid package announced last year. While it continues to maintain close ties with Russia, Saudi Arabia has expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
Zelensky’s meeting with the Crown Prince highlights Ukraine’s efforts to broaden international backing beyond its traditional Western allies. Kyiv has increasingly reached out to Gulf nations, Africa, and Asia in search of economic and political support.
As the war continues, Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic influence could play a key role in future negotiations. For Ukraine, strengthening ties with global partners remains crucial in securing continued aid and diplomatic backing.
Looking Ahead
While no concrete agreements were announced following the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing dialogue. As Ukraine continues to seek a just peace, partnerships with influential global players like Saudi Arabia could prove pivotal in shaping the course of the conflict.
Ukrainian President arrived in the city of Jeddah yesterday, March 10. Today, talks between the US and Ukrainian delegations will take place there; however, Zelensky will not attend the meeting.
Ukraine will be represented by Head of the Presidential Administration Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, while the United States will be represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
