“We celebrate World Press Freedom Day – a day to mark the essential role journalists play in a democracy,” reads the statement of the US Embassy in Georgia regarding World Press Freedom Day.
As noted in the statement, journalists stand vigilant to inform the public and hold institutions and those in power accountable adding a free and vibrant press is essential to ensure “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
“The United States Embassy honors the members of the press in Georgia who work to inform the public and hold institutions accountable in the face of violence and threats of violence, politically motivated prosecution and imprisonment, and other pressure. Any effort to undermine or silence the media is an attack on democracy itself,” reads the statement.
