UNDP and the Swiss Development & Cooperation Agency have brought focus on agribusiness projects in Western Georgia this Spring. The initiatives created through the partnership between these institutions are helping sustainable farming practices and promoting local agricultural businesses.
UNDP Georgia and the Embassy of Switzerland have been working closely with the Rural Development Agency to provide expert consultations to over 30,000 farmers now over a decade. These efforts have introduced innovative and climate-conscious agricultural practices to the region and strengthened Georgia’s agribusiness sector.
Sustainable Greenhouse Farming in Tskaltubo
In Tskaltubo, a greenhouse is successfully growing a variety of herbs and vegetables, such as fennel, coriander, parsley, and celery, in addition to crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggplants. This initiative not only supports the local market but also exports fresh produce to international markets, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
Innovative Beekeeping Practices in Martvili
Georgia has a long-standing history of beekeeping, with archaeological evidence showing honey production dating back over 7,000 years. In Martvili, a farm has adopted energy-efficient beehives, improving productivity and supporting the sustainability of the beekeeping industry in the region.
