In line with the UN’s World Population Prospects, the World Population Review reports that as of October 2024, the Georgian population stands at 3,807,583 people, with a growth rate of 0.06%, ranking 179th in the world. The UN states that unless the current rate changes, the Georgian population will decline by nearly half in approximately 40 years.

Hourly rates in Georgia:

One person is born every 12.2 minutes.

One person dies every 11.7 minutes.

One immigrant arrives every 288 minutes.

One person leaves the country permanently every 1,440 minutes.

Daily rates in Georgia:

118 people are born each day.

123 people die each day.

Migration results in 5 people each day.

The ultimate population change is -1 person per day.

From January 1 until now, the net population change equals -276 people. The last documented decrease in the Georgian population was in 2020 when, compared to 2019, the net change was -0.3%. However, since 2023, the birth rate has been increasing, growing by 0.7% compared to 2022, reaching a population of 3,807,490 people.

Nevertheless, the UN states that unless the current rate changes, the Georgian population will decline by nearly half in approximately 40 years. More specifically, the organization projects that with the current birth and immigration rates, the population will continue to decrease, and by 2050, the annual rate will reach -0.55%.

If these forecasts are accurate, the following interpretations can be made:

  • By 2025, the Georgian population will be 3,806,670.
  • By 2030, 3,748,350.
  • By 2040, 3,576,930.
  • By 2050, 3,393,665.

The World Population Review, based on the UN analytic report, provides possible explanations for this issue, including the preference for baby boys, leading to excessive abortions, and financial difficulties preventing families from having more than one child.

“One of the prospective ways to solve the issue of population stagnation is ensuring social benefits and aid to families with multiple children, as well as pregnant women,” declared the World Population Review.
