The Eurobasket Championship 2022 is scheduled for September 1-18 this year and it is to be hosted by Tbilisi, along with three other European cities, Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, announced.
Group A matches of the European championship will be held in Tbilisi and the national teams of Spain, Russia, Turkey, Belgium and Bulgaria will be playing along with Georgia.
A new Sports Palace of European standards is being built to serve as the key venue of EuroBasket. Construction will be completed this summer.
The Georgian team will participate in the fifth European Championship in a row this September.
The PM noted that the Youth Championship of Europe in Football will be held in Georgia in 2023.
“Games will be held in Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi. Along with Romania, we will be hosting the Under 21s European Championship in Football. The strongest teams will visit the country – 8 teams from 8 selected countries. The final match will be played at the new Batumi Football Stadium, which was built with funding allocated by the Government of Georgia. It will be a tremendous event in 2023. A number of football celebrities will visit Georgia to the delight of many fans in the country,” Garibashvili noted.
“Together with Tea, I had a meeting with Levan Kobiashvili, Chairman of the Football Federation of Georgia. We talked about this topic and noted that a temporary Government Commission needs to be established. Today, it will be summoned and will thereafter steer the success of the championship by addressing all the topics associated with it.
“In addition, the Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championship will be held in Bakuriani from February 19 through March 5, 2023. It is yet another great event, and intensive works are being carried out towards this end. Three new tracks will be arranged, along with artificial lakes and so on. Huge work will be carried out, which will ultimately remain in Bakuriani for the benefit of our population.
Bakuriani will host World Cup Stages on February 18-19 and March 5-6 in 2022. It is part of the commitment assumed towards the international federation,” stated Garibashvili.
