Tbilisi will host its annual awards ceremony for outstanding local athletes on January 23, recognizing sport related achievements at international competitions, Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced at a meeting of the city government.
Launched in 2018, the initiative has become a central pillar of the municipality’s efforts to support professional sport and acknowledge athletes who have brought distinction to the capital. Kaladze said the promotion of sport and healthy living remains one of the city government’s main priorities, aligned with broader national policies.
The mayor stated that both the Georgian government and Tbilisi City Hall have expanded incentive programs for successful athletes in recent years, placing particular emphasis on encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle. He noted that sport plays a critical role in improving public health and longevity, especially for younger generations.
Tbilisi City Hall, he added, supports sport at all levels, from professional to amateur, through a range of projects, programs, and targeted funding. The annual awards ceremony is among the most significant of these initiatives.
At this year’s event, 236 Tbilisi-based athletes who achieved notable results at World and European Championshipswill be honored. In addition, five women’s teams and one amputee football team will also receive awards.
Since the program’s launch in 2018, a total of 931 athletes have been recognized under the initiative. For 2025, the program’s budget amounts to GEL 1,297,000.
