Public transport in Tbilisi will be free of charge on March 21–22, Tbilisi City Hall announced, as the country prepares to bid farewell to Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II.
City authorities stated that municipal transport — including buses, minibuses, and the metro — will operate on their usual routes and schedules during the two days. The metro will run in its regular mode, serving passengers from 06:00 to 00:00.
The decision to make transport free of charge was adopted by a State Commission established in connection with the Patriarch’s funeral.
“Tbilisi municipal transport — buses, minibuses, and the metro — will serve passengers free of charge on March 21–22,” City Hall said in a statement, noting that services will function without any changes to existing intervals or routes.
Georgian Railways has also announced that it will provide free travel for passengers during the same period.
Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II passed away at the age of 93. A national day of mourning has been declared in Georgia in connection with his death. The Patriarch is set to be laid to rest on Sunday, March 22, at Sioni Cathedral.
