SSSG arrests UNM Council member Lasha Tsanava for alleged residence permit fraud

The Anti-Corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia has arrested Lasha Tsanava (L. Ts.), a member of the United National Movement’s Political Council, on charges of fraud.

Emzar Gagnidze, director of the Agency, says Tsanava promised a foreign citizen a one-year Georgian residence permit in exchange for $5,600, claiming he could secure it through his connections.

The investigation revealed that on May 21, 2025, the foreign citizen transferred part of the amount to Tsanava’s account. Later, during meetings in Tbilisi on May 30 and June 12, the individual handed over an additional $2,500 in cash, bringing the total amount fraudulently obtained to $2,650.

Covert investigative actions, authorized by the court, produced audio and video evidence of the crime. Tsanava was arrested on the basis of this material.

The investigation is ongoing under Article 19-180, Part 2, Subparagraph “b” of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which carries a prison sentence of 4 to 7 years.
