“We held meetings with the President of the German Bundestag, Mrs. Bärbel Bas, and the Chairs of the European Union Affairs, the Legal Affairs, and the Defense Committees and all the meetings were saturated with the main aspiration; it is the aspiration that our population just recently heard from the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz stating that Europe should expand from Lisbon to Tbilisi. It is the attitude and aspiration we witnessed in all the representatives and all the Factions of the Bundestag that Georgia is the part of Europe and thus, the EU membership of Georgia is the decision that shall be definitely enforced,” the Speaker, Shalva Papuashvili stated during his visit to Germany.
As the Speaker commented to the media, at the meetings held by the Georgian Parliamentary Delegation in Berlin with high officials of Germany, the host country gave a positive assessment to the efforts of Georgia that are directed to the EU membership; Germany supports the granting of the EU candidate status to Georgia, the Speaker added.
“We had the conversations underlining that the political decision to be made next year concerning the granting of the EU candidate status to Georgia shall be firm. As to the technical parameters, naturally, Georgia meets all the criteria and we also have 12 recommendations we shall comply with; we do all in our power to, within the shortest possible term, accomplish this process and progress to the next stage of expectation of the assessments of the EU and its respective decision,” Papuashvili noted.
