Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has accused Brussels of ongoing political interference in Georgia’s justice system, stating that the EU continues to ignore historical lessons. In a social media post, Papuashvili wrote, “Brussels must cease its political interference in the justice system; regrettably, it continues to disregard the lessons of history.”
He criticized EU officials and politicians for what he described as selective application of European values. Papuashvili claimed that if EU leaders truly adhered to these principles, they would have issued formal apologies to the Georgian public following every ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) that revealed political bias in key cases.
“Brussels continues to justify politically motivated crimes and meddling in the judiciary,” he said, referencing ECHR decisions related to high-profile cases such as those of Mikheil Saakashvili, Nika Melia, Nika Gvaramia, and Rustavi 2.
“Had European officials remained faithful to their own values, Georgians would have heard apologies after each ECHR judgment. Instead, we are witnessing repeated and unjustified attacks on the Georgian state and a reinforcement of a harmful political cycle,” Papuashvili concluded.
