Russia is providing Iran with intelligence that could help target American forces in the Middle East, say three officials familiar with the matter, signaling a potentially dangerous expansion of the ongoing conflict in the region.
The officials say Moscow has been supplying Tehran with targeting information that could assist Iranian-backed operations against US military personnel and installations. If confirmed, this would mark the first indication that another major US adversary is participating—albeit indirectly—in the confrontation involving American forces.
The reported assistance, which has not previously been disclosed, raises concerns that the conflict could draw in one of Washington’s primary nuclear-armed rivals. Russia possesses advanced intelligence-gathering capabilities, including satellite surveillance and electronic monitoring, which could significantly enhance Iran’s ability to track and potentially strike US assets in the region.
While the exact nature and scale of the intelligence support remain unclear, officials suggest the cooperation reflects a growing strategic alignment between Moscow and Tehran amid heightened tensions across the Middle East.
The development comes as the regional conflict continues to widen, with Iranian-aligned groups already involved in attacks against US positions and interests in several countries. Analysts warn that outside assistance from a major power could increase the effectiveness and frequency of such operations.
For Washington, the reported intelligence sharing would represent a serious escalation in geopolitical competition surrounding the conflict. It would also underscore the increasingly interconnected nature of global rivalries, with Russia and Iran strengthening ties while both face pressure from the United States and its allies.
So far, neither Moscow nor Tehran has publicly commented on the allegations.
Attention is now turning to Washington’s potential response. US officials are expected to closely monitor the situation, and any confirmation of Russian involvement could prompt diplomatic protests, additional sanctions, or other measures aimed at deterring further cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.
