Russia Cuts off Gas Supplies to Poland

News agency Reuters reports that Russia is to cut off gas supplies to Poland.

“Russian gas supplies under the Yamal contract to Poland have been halted, private broadcaster Polsat News and the Onet.pl website reported, citing unnamed sources. PGNiG SA, which buys gas from Gazprom under a long-term contract that expires this year, declined to comment. (Reporting by Alan Charlish and Marek Strzelecki),” writes Reuters.

The BBC reported that “Poland’s deputy foreign minister said Warsaw can cope without Gazprom’s gas.” Marcin Przdacz told the BBC that Poland had taken some decisions many years ago to prepare for such a situation and said that as a result, now there are options to get gas from other partners, “including the US and Gulf nations.”

As the BBC notes, by the end of the year, Poland was planning to stop importing Russian gas anyway.

It should be noted that Russia has said it will also cut off gas supplies to Bulgaria. Gazprom informed the Bulgarian state gas company Bulgargaz of its decision to also cut off natural gas supplies.
