After yesterday’s attack on former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, 5th President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili was also allegedly pelted with eggs, while returning to Georgia from the Munich Security Conference held in Europe, reported TV Pirveli.
Footage of this incident has yet to be released online – in Gakharia’s case, the footage was released yesterday by the individuals involved in the attack, who first asked the politician insulting questions, then cursed and pelted him with eggs.
On the morning of February 18, Georgian Dream MP Davit Matikashvili called Zurabishvili a “political zero,” who “continues to betray the homeland” and that it is “understandable” for the public to “answer” her:
“She travels to foreign countries and tries to harm the country. Society has its own reaction. It is understandable that society has given a certain response to this betrayal,” Matikashvili said.
On February 17, eggs were thrown at Giorgi Gakharia and his teammate Elguja Khokrishvili at the airport after they returned from Munich.
Video footage released by several media outlets shows several people nearby filming the incident on their mobile phones.
“Are you no longer funded by USAID?” “Are you no longer a traitor, an unprincipled agent?” – were heard as eggs were thrown at Giorgi Gakharia, the chairman of the Gakharia for Georgia party, and Elguja Khokrishvili, Georgia’s former ambassador to Germany. The incident took place inside the airport.
Leaders of Gakharia’s party, including Beka Liluashvili, claim the attack was organized by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the Georgian Dream. The party says that the police present nearby facilitated this process through inaction.
“The hysterical, violent so-called government is becoming uncontrollable,” the party’s statement read. ‘It is understandable that [Bidzina] Ivanishvili is frightened by the results of the Munich Security Conference, and this hysteria is also a result of this.”
