Public Defender Nino Lomjaria commented on how the pandemic was handled by the government, noting that, as a result of ineffective measures against Covid, the country still has a high rate of infection.
“The vaccination rate is very low in Georgia and today only 37% of the adult population is fully vaccinated, as well as the number of the fully vaccinated population over 60, which is only 37% vaccinated in this age group. The low rate of vaccination of the elderly is particularly alarming, as this group is highly susceptible to the new coronavirus worldwide. The death rate in Georgia is the highest among unvaccinated people over 60,” Lomjaria said.
The Public Defender also noted that, unfortunately, the state has not been able to facilitate the vaccination process for this age group of the population, and for a long time, those who wanted to be vaccinated could only register through the online website, which was often an insurmountable obstacle for the elderly to get vaccinated.
“As a result of ineffective measures against Covid, the country still has a high rate of virus infection, leading to overcrowding in the medical sector,” Lomjaria said.
