A protest in support of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli quickly turned into a clash between demonstrators and police on 9 April Street.
The protest was organized by media representatives and demanded the immediate release of Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, declaring her detention unlawful. Arrested on January 12, Amaglobeli is held as a preventative measure under Article 353 of the Criminal Code for her alleged assault on a police officer. Currently, she is on a hunger strike in Rustavi Prison, with protesters warning that her health is at serious risk.
Naturally, the demonstration also opposed legislative changes introduced by the Georgian Dream party and protesters marched toward the Parliament’s side entrance, with police urging them not to block the roads. As protesters insisted that their intentions were different, a confrontation took place.
Tensions went even further when officers took away two individuals from the area. Demonstration persists outside Parliament until this moment, with police officers mobilized.
